On Bankless, core developers Justin Drake and Dankrad Feist proposed slashing ETH issuance to curb total supply locked in staking contracts. Six Ethereum Foundation researchers backed reducing payouts as staking expands, aiming to prevent liquid derivatives like Lido from replacing native ETH as primary collateral. Proposers argue that unchecked derivative dominance threatens underlying settlement security.
The proposal sparked immediate pushback across decentralized finance. Etherfi founder Mike Silagadze warned on Bankless that capping issuance directly destabilizes core protocols, noting that seven of the top ten DeFi platforms rely on liquid staking returns for collateral.

Aave founder Stani Kulechov argued on Bankless that stripping native yield converts ETH into a cheap borrowing asset. Traders will borrow low-rate ETH, sell it on open markets, and park proceeds in yield-bearing stablecoins. Instead of accruing value, the asset faces steady open-market selling pressure.

While researchers pitched the proposal to protect decentralization, economic realities suggest the reverse. Silagadze cited survey data showing two percent yield as the breakeven floor for home node operators facing fixed overhead. Squeezing margins forces solo stakers offline while centralized exchanges survive on minimal capital costs, consolidating network consensus into custodial giants.
The debate also threatens institutional adoption. Corporate treasury buyers like Sharp Link and BitMine allocated capital into ETH based on predictable yield expectations. Retroactively cutting returns invalidates institutional risk models just as traditional finance enters through spot ETFs.
Governance timing worsened the friction when researchers introduced the proposal days before a core hard-fork decision meeting. Kulechov stressed that developers should prioritize privacy and scaling upgrades over economic engineering. Altering core parameters undermines the predictable neutrality institutional buyers require.
The battle lines are drawn between protocol purists and DeFi builders.
