Following eighteen months of escalating legal feuds and internal operational turmoil, Automattic's board of directors placed co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Matt Mullenweg on administrative leave on September 11, 2026. The intervention occurred after Mullenweg returned from Burning Man with plans for additional corporate restructuring. To steady operations at the parent firm behind WordPress and Pocket Casts, Chief Financial Officer Mark Davies stepped in as interim chief executive.

The suspension marks a dramatic rupture for one of open-source software's most prominent figures.

Tensions inside the company had been building long before the board acted. Over the prior year and a half, Mullenweg launched multiple public legal disputes and drove the departure of more than 150 employees who rejected his management direction.
