Bitcoin Builders and AI Insurgents Are Merging Into One Movement

Mar 7, 2026Summary from 2 podcasts.
  • Crypto's core principles — privacy, sovereignty, censorship resistance — are migrating into AI infrastructure, with Venice AI as the clearest example of that crossover.
  • OpenClaw's record-breaking GitHub growth is pulling Bitcoin builder communities toward mainstream AI development, not the other way around.
  • The barrier to building is collapsing: non-programmers are shipping functional tools in under a day, and the communities forming around these tools no longer sort neatly into "crypto people" or "AI people."

Two insurgencies found each other — and the incumbents in both industries should be paying attention.

OpenClaw became the most-followed open-source project in history in 39 days, surpassing React's GitHub star count while AI incumbents were busy building "agent" dashboards nobody asked for. Logan Allen of Finn Capital described it on This Week in Startups as the jester stealing the crown while the king looked down. What nobody fully anticipated was which communities would cluster around it first.

The answer, in part: Bitcoin builders. The Presidio Bitcoin Jam's recent meetup drew its largest and most diverse crowd ever — a majority non-Bitcoiners — precisely because the event centered on OpenClaw. The Venn diagram is collapsing. Jesse Posner's project Vora started as a Bitcoin-specific tool and is now targeting mainstream markets. The community didn't abandon Bitcoin; it outgrew the label.

The deeper thread connecting these worlds is philosophical. When OpenClaw briefly defaulted to Venice AI as its backend, it wasn't an accident — it was alignment. Venice founder Eric Vorhees, a crypto veteran, built the platform explicitly to transplant blockchain-era values into AI: user sovereignty, privacy, freedom from censorship. On This Week in Startups, he put it plainly: those principles were entirely absent from AI, so he decided to be the change.

The ground-level evidence is just as striking. At the Presidio Builder Meetup, Haley — no programming background — vibe-coded a functional digital raffle system using Claude, Vercel, and Supabase in less than a day. Ashu built an AI-powered index across 100 hours of podcast content. The tools that Bitcoin builders are reaching for aren't Bitcoin-specific. They're just the best tools available.

The movement forming here isn't crypto eating AI or AI eating crypto. It's people who already rejected surveillance defaults and trusted-third-party assumptions finding that the new generation of open-source AI tools shares their instincts. The crown changed hands. The kingdom is still being written.

Eric Vorhees, This Week in Startups:

- I realized that the principles that I felt were important from the crypto world namely like user sovereignty, the right to privacy, free speech, lack of censorship, these were entirely absent in AI.

- I realized that I should be the change that I wish to see in the world and so started Venice.
