Saronic builds Texas shipyard to counter China

That gap means traditional defense strategies no longer work. A single American destroyer costs $3 billion, takes eight years to construct, and carries roughly 100 missile tubes. Speaking on All-In, Saronic co-founder Dino Mavrookas explained that software-defined vessels flip those unit economics. By building 20 uncrewed Marauder vessels annually, a single automated shipyard can field 320 missile tubes at a fraction of the cost.
To scale production, Saronic selected Brownsville, Texas for Port Alpha, an 800-acre site built to operate like a silicon fab rather than a legacy shipyard.

Saronic co-founder Vib Alakar noted that traditional yards separate design from operations, creating massive supply bottlenecks. By vertically integrating hardware design, software APIs, and yard operations, Saronic aims to cut domestic shipbuilding costs in half.
Stripping out crew quarters, plumbing, and life support shrinks ship architecture and expands operational range. Saronic's 24-foot Corsair craft can travel 1,000 nautical miles, and recently executed a high-stakes mission rescuing two downed American pilots in the Strait of Hormuz.
The sea domain extends beneath the surface, where the competitive balance looks slightly different. On The a16z Show, Ulysses chief executive Will O'Brien noted that while China dominates traditional surface shipbuilding, the two nations remain neck-and-neck in autonomous underwater vehicles. Both produce only single-digit thousands of subsea drones annually, though China has already deployed submarine-sized models with an 18,000-kilometer range.

Funding these industrial megaprojects requires bypassing legacy Pentagon channels. Autonomous systems currently receive just one percent of the total United States defense budget. To build factory capacity before conflict erupts, Saronic raised $2.5 billion in private capital over four years rather than waiting on federal procurement cycles.
Mass on the water no longer requires crew quarters or decade-long build times. It requires software, capital, and assembly lines.
