Reporting from Greg Jaffe of the New York Times on The Daily details how Hegseth purged commanders he claims advanced through diversity initiatives rather than merit. For the first time in a decade, zero women earned admiral promotions.

Previous defense secretaries tolerated ideological friction with inherited military leadership. Hegseth abandoned that restraint overnight, establishing an environment where career advancement hinges on mirroring cabinet politics.

The shift triggered immediate back-channel maneuvering among high-ranking officers. Before Hegseth removed her as Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Lisa Franquetti warned her four-star admirals against auditioning for her post or dividing the service.

Admiral Darrell Caudill ignored that directive entirely. Caudill instructed his staff to contact Hegseth’s inner circle directly, positioning himself as an ideological ally eager to dismantle Navy diversity policies.

When Hegseth dismissed Franquetti, he ignored all three candidates formally submitted through official naval selection channels. Hegseth interviewed only Caudill, granting him top command despite an active inspector general investigation into Caudill regarding inappropriate remarks about sexual assault.
